The Institute is the largest in the country research institution dedicated to solving fundamental and applied problems of heat and mass transfer, fluid and gas dynamics, energy, heat tech, chemical physics, physics of combustion and explosion, nanotechnology, and the creation of energy efficient and environmentally friendly technologies and equipment, apparatus and instruments for energy and engineering, agriculture and the construction industry, medicine, chemical, electronics, radio engineering, food industry, space industry.

The scientific profile of the Institute includes fundamental and applied research in the field of chemistry and physical chemistry of polymers, physical chemistry of ion exchange and extraction processes, organic synthesis of functionally substituted heterocyclic, aromatic and aliphatic compounds, microbiological synthesis of biologically active compounds, fibrous catalysts for various purposes. The research and development activity is focused on technologies for production and use of new polymer materials, drugs and biologically active substances for medicine and agriculture.

The research and development activity in the Institute deals with cross-wedge rolling, laser systems, technology of nickel-free iron and economically alloyed steels, precious metals, aluminum-graphite materials, components and semi-finished products made of them; armor materials and protective covers, cutting instruments, diagnostics of vessels; vacuum and electroplating, recovery of diamonds, small aircraft systems.
